Forward Head Posture

Posture plays an important role in a person's overall health.  It is generally an indicator, not a condition.  Because "normal" posture has been clearly defined over the years, poor posture can be an indication of muscle imbalance, or compensatory changes in the spine.

For every 1 inch the head moves forward of neutral ( ear lined up with the center of the shoulder), an additional 15-30 pounds of tension is placed on the supporting neck muscles.

Most adults will present with 2 or more inches of additional forward displacement.  It's estimated that 90% of the general population carries this type of posture profile.  It doesn't mean that it's normal, just prevalent.

A secondary result of this posture profile is an increased curve in the lumbar spine.  Many think that the head posture is a result of the increased low back curve, but it is actually the opposite.  In an attempt to balance the body, in light of the 10-12 lb. head being forward of the normal center of gravity, the body bends backward.  This increases the low back curve and tilts the pelvis forward.

To summarize the effects of forward head, round-shouldered posture on the muscles and spine, these postures:

  1. Decrease the load-bearing capabilities of the spine

  2. Increase the loading on its supportive musculature

  3. Decrease the flexibility and strength of that supporting musculature.
